Days by Dahlia Postpartum aika

The postpartum period – What happens to the body after childbirth and how to support recovery?

Giving birth turns an entirely new page in life. The first few months (often called the fourth trimester) are often a time of finding a new rhythm (editor's note: or not having one at all...), but at the same time, the mother’s own body and mind are undergoing one of the greatest recovery processes in their history.

Many mothers describe the postpartum period as a vulnerable and sensitive time, as if we are completely raw. And is it any wonder? The body and mind have done something incredible. The postpartum period varies individually, but many mothers describe feeling completely leveled out about two years after giving birth. Postpartum has only started to be talked about in recent years, and at Days by Dahlia, we want to do our part in bringing awareness specifically to this time. It is raw how new mothers are still expected to take care of things and perform just like anyone else.

After childbirth, the focus easily shifts only to the baby, but the new mother in particular needs care, rest, and support. We at Days by Dahlia want to bring more awareness to the importance of this maternal care so that we can, through our attitudes, allow mothers peace and understanding during this sensitive time.

What happens in the body after childbirth?

After the pregnancy ends, the body's hormonal activity and physiology change rapidly:

  • A rapid drop in hormone levels: Estrogen and progesterone levels plummet sharply immediately after the placenta is delivered. This can manifest not only in extreme mood swings but also in body sweating and skin becoming oily or dry.

  • Telogen effluvium, or postpartum hair loss: During pregnancy, high estrogen levels prevented normal hair shedding, which is why hair felt exceptionally thick. About 2–4 months after childbirth, a large number of hairs simultaneously enter the resting phase and fall out. This can be startling, but it is a temporary reaction.

  • Skin elasticity and dryness: The body's fluid balance is finding a new equilibrium, and potential breastfeeding consumes a large amount of the body's resources and fluids. The skin may feel dull, tight, and tired.

  • Tissue recovery: The abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, and skin need time and building materials to recover from the stretching caused by pregnancy. A new mother built a new human in her body from nothing in 9 months; it is ridiculous that we expect mothers to return to their old measurements as quickly as possible as if nothing had happened.

Gentle recovery: How to care for your body and hair with Days by Dahlia products?

Postpartum skin and hair care do not require complicated, multi-step rituals, for which there is rarely time in the everyday life of a new parent. The most important things are ease, gentleness, and nourishment. Days by Dahlia was born from a new mother's need to nurture mothers themselves.

Our tips for a mother's own self-care moment:

  • Breastfeeding and sleep deprivation easily dry out the skin. After showering, apply Yummy Mummy Beauty Oil to damp skin. It locks in moisture, supports skin elasticity, and strengthens the skin's own protective barrier. The oil is not only excellent during pregnancy but especially after childbirth to nourish dry skin.

  • After childbirth, the scalp can be very itchy and become oily easily. Our Baby Hair Boost hair tonic was developed specifically for this need. Apply the hair tonic all over a damp scalp and let it dry, or blow-dry and style as desired. You can boost microcirculation in the scalp by gently massaging it. (Or by asking a partner or friend to massage it.)

  • Our oil-based treatment cream Yummy Mummy Beauty Cream, developed for the massage and rehabilitation of c-section scars. The cream is a nourishing product that treats scar tissue and can be used to help with c-section scar rehabilitation once the scar has closed.
  • Take your massage moments as a small mindfulness session: breathe deeply and thank your body for the tremendous work it has done.

Use our products with love.

Remember that a postpartum body and mind do not need fixing. They need patience, nourishment, and gentle care. Days by Dahlia was born from a desire to break the "bounce back" culture that creates pressure and anxiety, and to give mothers space for exactly the kind of rest and self-understanding that every mother needs.

You are the force mama.
